Totally Girl Powerful: A Self-Love Workshop for Women

Last updated May 13, 2021 by Tessa Bishop

New to Boise, Girl Powerful is a nonprofit organization on a mission to ensure all girls feel seen, valued and heard when they need it most. With a focus on providing a safe space for girls, Girl Powerful hosts enrichment courses led by the original Girl Powerful Journal based on socio-emotional learning (SEL).

What is the Self-Love Workshop?

The self-love workshop will focus on learning the importance of self-love while practicing self-love exercises. Sonya and Tedi, the sisters and brains behind Girl Powerful, will be running participants through the workshop. For the first Totally Girl Powerful workshop, we're asking adult women of Boise to join us in an evening of new friends, open conversation, and positive thinking.

The Self-Love workshop will be held on Friday, May 21st, at 5:15 PM at the Boise Centre in downtown Boise.

The workshop will include:

  • Practicing self-love by diving into your personal strengths and capabilities
  • Affirmation bracelets workshop
  • A dinner provided by Coned Pizza

All proceeds benefit Girl Powerful, a youth empowerment nonprofit designed to give tween and teen girls social and emotional learning tools to build a strong sense of self. Girl Powerful will be using the funds to support youth in the Treasure Valley to build confidence and be proud of who they are.

Trust, us you won't want to miss this! There is a limited amount of tickets available for our first Boise event (only 12 total). Purchase a ticket before it's too late:

Who is Girl Powerful?

After years of personal experience and education-based understanding, sisters Sonya and Tedi Serge decided it was time they help provide a course that enables tween and teen girls the mental health skills to succeed in the future as women.

Who are Sonya and Tedi, you ask?

Tedi was a classroom teacher and enrichment director who saw the need for girls to have access to SEL. Sonya experienced what many people recognize as "hitting a wall" within her career and realized she was neglecting her own mental health and developing bad habits.

After realizing the immense and unattainable pressure young girls experience growing up, Sonya and Tedi decided it was time to make a change.

How can Girl Powerful help young girls with social and emotional learning?

According to DoSomething.org, 7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don't measure up in some way, including their look, performance in school and relationships with friends and family members. Further, by the time a girl reached the age of 8, her confidence will decline by 30%.

Girl Powerful wants to change that statistic and prevent tween girls, ages 8 to 14 years, from falling into the "Confidence Gap." Utilizing an SEL curriculum, endorsed by L. Edmondson Ed. D., Girl Powerful provides tools and skills to help increase individual empowerment.

Prior to COVID-19, Girl Powerful hosted an After School Alliance where they would walk girls through their youth program, following along with their Girl Powerful Journal over the course of a few weeks. With the change in society going mostly online, Girl Powerful shifted its courses to virtual events and workshops. Girl Powerful now hosts virtual after school enrichment programs, self-care summits, and mental health products.

Since 2014, Sonya and Tedi Serge have built a safe community to help girls build confidence, celebrate their strengths and teach them that they hold the power inside of them to be proud of who they are.
